Rules and Regulations for Chimpanzee Trekking in Kalinzu Forest
Kalinzu Forest Reserve, nestled along the Kasese-Mbarara highway in Uganda, is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, renowned for its thriving chimpanzee population. To ensure the safety of visitors, protect the nature the primates and their habitat, and preserve the natural beauty of the forest, strict rules and regulations are in place. These guidelines are designed to create a harmonious and sustainable experience for all.
Before You Go
- Obtain a Permit: Chimpanzee trekking requires a valid permit, which must be booked in advance a valid permit, which must be booked in advance through a licensed tour operator or the Uganda wildlife Authority. Permits are limited daily, so early booking is essential, especially during peak seasons.
- Age Requirement: only individuals aged 12 years and above are allowed to participate in chimpanzee trekking.
- Health Check: visitors suffering from infectious diseases such as flu, cough, or diarrhea are prohibited from joining the trek. Chimpanzees share nearly 98.7% of their DNA with humans, making them highly susceptible to human illnesses.
- Pack Appropriately: wear sturdy hiking shoes with good grip, long-sleeved shirts, and long trousers to protect against insects, Thorns, and rough terrain. Bring a raincoat, insect repellent, sunscreen, a hat, sufficient water, and energy snacks. Binoculars and hiking stick are also recommended.
During the Trek
- Group size: A maximum of 6 people is allowed to visit to avoid overcrowding and stressing the animals.
- Stay with Your Guide: Always remain with your trained guide or range. They are familiar, with forest, the chimpanzees’ behaviour, and safety protocols. Never venture off alone
- Photography: The use of flash photograph is strictly prohibited. Flash can startle the chimpanzees and cause them stress or harm.
- Foods and drinks: Do not eat, drink, or smoke in the presence of the chimpanzees.
- Waste disposal: Do not litter the forest. Carry all your waste with you until you find a proper rubbish bin or disposal area.
- Movement and Guidance: Always stay on the designated tourist trails. Do not wander off alone or leave your group.
