There are several convenient ways to get to Kalinzu Forest Reserve, depending on your starting point and preferred mode of transport. The forest is located in western Uganda, close to Queen Elizabeth National Park, making it easily accessible for travelers on the popular western safari circuit.
Traveling by road from Kampala is the most common way to reach Kalinzu Forest. The journey covers approximately 375 kilometers and takes about six to seven hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. From Kampala, travelers follow the Kampala–Masaka–Mbarara highway, then continue toward Bushenyi or Rubirizi. From these towns, Kalinzu Forest is a short drive away, with clear signposts leading to the forest offices. The main highways are tarmacked and in good condition, though the final access roads may be murram, so a four-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended, especially during the rainy season.
For visitors already exploring Queen Elizabeth National Park, getting to Kalinzu Forest is quick and straightforward. The forest lies only about 10 to 15 kilometers from key park areas such as the Ishasha and Mweya sectors. This close proximity makes Kalinzu an ideal stop for chimpanzee tracking either before or after a game drive or boat cruise within the park. Most lodges in the area can arrange transport directly to the forest for day trips.
For those seeking to get to a more interaction with the people a public transport is an option together with those of budget-conscious travelers. Buses and shared taxis operate daily from Kampala to Bushenyi, Ishaka, or Rubirizi. Once in these towns, visitors can hire a local taxi or motorcycle taxi, commonly known as a boda-boda, to reach the Kalinzu Forest headquarters. While this option is affordable, it may take longer and requires careful planning, especially for early morning activities such as chimpanzee tracking.
For travelers short on time, a combination of air and road travel can be used. Domestic flights are available from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi Airfield to airstrips near Queen Elizabeth National Park, such as Kasese or Ishasha. From these airstrips, Kalinzu Forest can be reached by road within a few hours using a private vehicle or lodge-arranged transfer.
Regardless of the route chosen, visitors are advised to arrive at the forest early in the day, especially if participating in guided activities. Transport can be arranged independently, through tour operators, or via lodges in the surrounding area, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable journey to Kalinzu Forest Reserve.
